For this film, produced by Howard Hugues for the RKO, John Wayne is surrounded with talented actors : Pedro Armendariz Sr who have played with him in John Ford's films in 1948 " Fort Apache " and " Three Gdfathers ", Susan Hayward (2 films with John Wayne : " Reap The Wild Wind " and " The Fighting Seabees "), Agnes Moorehead (Endora, the mom witch of " Betwiched "), William Conrad (who will be famous in the series " Cannon " in the 70s) Lee Van Cleef (" The Good, The Bad and The Ugly " and " The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance " with John Wayne), etc…The picture, with a budget of which amounted to 6 million, goes out on the American screens on February 21, 1956, but done a flop and meets itself taxed by anticommunism by the Soviet citizens who forbid the distribution of it in the country where is situated the action. " The Conqueror " was classified among the 50 worse films of all the times due to his little theatrical chopped dialogues in the sauce Hamlet, containing certain funny monologues (but unintentionally …), said by famous actors dressed in tunics which made them more ridiculous than credible (John Wayne having too much accustomed to us in his eternal embellishes with images of cowboy).The curse comes down from then on on this production : on the 220 participants, the actors and the technicians, the People Magazine booked in 1984 90 cases of different cancers.
