| In conclusion, John
Wayne, " The Conqueror " who
represented and defended strong and glorious America, met
finally the death tragically because of this same America
which he loved so much … But seen the ignorance of
the scientists and the servicemen of this epoch who
proceeded to these nuclear tests in the Nevada without
being able to prejudge some radioactive contagion in the
time, none of them was able to be blamed.
A film, nevertheless
dated 1954, entitled " Them ! "
of Gordon Douglas with notably James Whitmore, Edmund
Gwenn and Joan Weldon told the history of huge ants
irradiated by the first american nuclear test … The
professor in the film said exactly that he didn't know
what this phenomenon of irradiation could give in the
future excepting some huge ants …
I want to clarify my
website about its contents, so that it have there no
misenderstanding (because the subject is delicate), so
that it's not necessary to see through this site of
anti-nuclear thoughts, or something else against the
United State, the nuclear, the army, or something else
about... (on the contrary, I love America and its cinema,
its landscapes, its interesting history, etc..). No
militancy here, it is in no way my role. I just want to
share my passion about the cinema and present through
this shooting of the surprising facts hidden behind the
history of the film that I did not suspect myself before
having heard about it on tv and in a little website about
this subject &éyou could find in my links...

" The Conqueror
" is only very rarely programmed on the
television. If one day this one is diffused, you will
doubtless look at it under the another angle than that of
the simple entertainment by knowing henceforth that it is
credibly at the origin of the tragic end of a part of the
cast of the film. At least, in the sights of the
distribution and the different talents which composed the
technical team, this film should have been very good,
although it is not very well appreciate in the film
criticisms... Jean Tulard (a french cinema critic), in
his " Guide of Films " of 1990, said all the
same that this film " is not so bad as one said it
". But if " The Conqueror " is not
unforgettable, it will remain it all the same somewhere
bound for ever to this incredible history which will
classify it for ever in the category of the cursed films.
Henceforth, in the
United States, this film and its main actor contributed
to the research against The Big C, with notably "
The John Wayne Cancer Institute " , what
finally makes them very honorable. This institute which
was officially opened on July 1st, 1991 to the Saint
John's Hospital of Santa Monica is chaired by Michael
Wayne, son of The Big J, who interpreted a Mongolian
guard in the film "The Conqueror " .
As regards Steve
McQueen, one can find him a relation with Dick Powell,
because in 1958, while this last one was in the head of
the house of production " Four Stars Films ",
he engaged Steve McQueen in Josh Randall's role for the
serial " Wanted, Dead or Alive " ( " In
the name of the Law " in french) diffused on
September 06, 1958 on CBS. [" Four Stars Films
" founded by four stars of Hollywood for the Studios
of Los Angeles: Dick Powell, David Niven, Ida Lupino and
Charles Boyer]. He also did an appearance in the episode
" Four hours in white " in 1958 in the series
" Climax ! "....
Steve McQueen
finishes too his life to fight against a cancer which ate
away at him... He dies on November 07, 1980, thirteen
hours after an ultimate surgical operation to thwart his
cancer of lungs (called " mesothelioma ") which
became widespread in the nape of the neck and in the
belly, in Juarez ( Mexico) private hospital " Santa
Rosa ". A blood clot had originated from Steve Mc
Queen's leg, causing an embolism, generator of a coronary
thrombosis. The doctors of " Cedars Sinai Hospital
" of Los Angeles had agreed that he had been a
victim of a too long exposure in the asbestos (meets on
docks during a first job). This explains maybe the
confusion which made write to the People magazine and to
those that had this info that Steve McQueen was a part of
the distribution of the Conqueror while it was not the
case.
Peace in their
soul...
In a book published
in 1993, entitled " American Ground Zero ", the
American photographer Carole Callagher published
inhabitants' portraits of the Nevada among the 170 000
which lived in a beam of 350 kilometres (217 miles
around) these nuclear tests during the 50s. It gives an
outline seizing effects of irradiation which created
numerous deformations or reproduction of cancers in any
kind on a lot of inhabitants. The team of the film was
not so an exception...
